Position Summary
This position manages accounting activities and provides support to the CFO and Executive leadership team. This position is responsible for designing, implementing, and enforcing policies and procedures, as well as streamlining effective accounting processes across multiple markets. This position reports to the CFO, Briefly.
The Director of Finance is responsible for the consistent application of accounting policies, procedures, and controls. This role is crucial to the record to report and purchase to pay processes. This role will work closely with all administrative departments and external accountants and auditors.
Essential Functions/Responsibilities
- Oversee all day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger, account reconciliations, and month-end/year-end close
- Manage Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable functions, ensuring timely and accurate client billing, collections, and processing of attorney-related payables and distributions
- Manage legal billing processes, ensuring compliance with client guidelines, engagement terms, and industry standards
- Prepare and maintain cash flow forecasts and projections to support firm operations and strategic planning
- Partner with external CPA to support attorney and partner tax filings, including preparation and filing of composite tax returns where required
- Collaborate with corporate finance and cross-functional teams to ensure consistency in accounting policies, systems, and financial operations across the firm
- Provide financial analysis, reporting, and strategic insights to firm leadership to support decision-making and long-term planning
- Oversee financial coordination of global patent and trademark filings, including working with docketing companies and international vendors to ensure accuracy and timeliness
- Manage banking relationships, including oversight of operating accounts, trust accounts (if applicable), and treasury functions
- Administer and oversee the firm’s 401(k) plan for partners, ensuring compliance with applicable regulations
- Establish and maintain strong internal controls to safeguard firm assets and ensure regulatory and ethical compliance
- Lead, mentor, and develop the finance and accounting team
Education/Technical Knowledge
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field (CPA strongly preferred)
- 7–10+ years of progressive finance and accounting experience, preferably within a law firm or professional services environment
- Strong knowledge of partnership accounting, legal billing practices, and attorney compensation structures
- Experience working with external auditors, tax advisors, and regulatory requirements specific to professional services
- Experience with international accounting practices and cross-border tax considerations is strongly preferred, particularly in a multi-jurisdictional environment
- Familiarity with trust accounting and compliance (IOLTA or equivalent) is a plus
- Proficiency in financial and billing systems (e.g., Quickbooks, Cleo, or similar platforms)
- Proven ability to manage complex financial operations across multiple entities and jurisdictions
