Industrial HVAC Apprentice Exempt
Purpose of Job:
The Industrial HVAC Technician will be responsible for commissioning, maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of Moffitt’s industrial HVAC systems, ensuring optimal functionality and efficiency for our customers. This role requires a strong understanding of industrial heating, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment. The Apprentice reports to the Industrial HVAC Technician Lead.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist the lead technician in commissioning, inspecting, and troubleshooting custom, built-to-order industrial HVAC systems and equipment, including chillers, boilers, make-up air units, air handling units, ventilation fans, and related components.
- Support and perform preventive maintenance tasks such as filter changes, lubrication, belt adjustments, and basic system inspections.
- Apply training to help calibrate thermostats, controllers, and sensors under supervision.
- Assist in diagnosing and repairing mechanical and electrical components including motors, pumps, valves, and control systems.
- Read and interpret mechanical and electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals with guidance.
- Maintain accurate documentation of maintenance activities, parts used, and system performance as directed by supervising technicians.
- Follow all company and site-specific safety procedures and participate actively in safety and technical training programs.
- Participate in technical and safety training programs to enhance field knowledge and certifications.
- As needed, perform field supervisor duties on projects with subcontracted installers
- Perform site visits and gather information for the Installation and Sales teams, as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the supervising technician or Construction Manager.
Skill/Job Requirements:
- Completion of an accredited trade or technical school program in HVAC, mechanical systems, or related discipline plus 2–4 years of hands-on field experience working with commercial or industrial HVAC systems.
- Familiarity with industrial HVAC components such as direct and indirect gas-fired units, chillers, pumps, and control systems preferred
- Working knowledge of HVAC principles, refrigeration cycles, combustion systems, and basic electrical troubleshooting.
- Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Outlook and experience navigating controls code, HMI’s, etc.
- Self-Starter. Ability to work independently, as well as in a group/team setting.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Safety mindset and OSHA 30 certification (training provided by Moffitt)
- Extensive US national travel and some Canada/Mexico travel to worksite locations required. Estimated 75% travel.
- Be physically fit – position will require sitting, standing, kneeling, climbing, lifting, and other physical activity as required for the task at hand.
- Work is performed in industrial settings, which may include exposure to varying temperatures, noise, and airborne particles.
- Occasional overtime, on-call availability, and emergency travel may be required.
