Job Description:
Bartle Wells Associates is seeking an associate financial analyst to join our team. This position is a critical role in the development and delivery of consulting projects to our public agency clients. Job responsibilities include assisting in development of utility rate studies, financial models, and strategic financial plans for our public agency clients. There is substantial opportunity for professional growth in this position both in function and compensation.
Key Responsibilities:
- Data Collection and Analysis: Collect and validate data from diverse sources to ensure accuracy, consistency, and integrity. Manage and analyze large datasets, including utility billing records, financial reports, and operational data. Collaborate with project managers and clients to clarify data inaccuracies, address issues and maintain high data quality standards for reliable analysis. Create clear summary tables, charts, and visualizations to present analytical results for client reports and presentations.
- Financial Model Development: Design and maintain advanced MS Excel-based financial models to support rate and fee studies for water, wastewater, stormwater, and solid waste utilities. Responsibilities include developing comprehensive analyses such as long-term financial planning, capital project funding strategies, cost allocation, and rate and fee structure design to ensure sustainable funding for utility clients.
- Prepare Client Deliverables: Prepare written reports and PowerPoint presentations that explain study methodologies, technical analyses, study recommendations and outcomes. Utilize tables, charts and graphs to display data, analysis and study outcomes. Ensure accuracy of reports, presentations and client deliverables.
- Client Communication: Utilize strong communication skills when communicating with clients in meetings and throughout the duration of projects. Participate in meetings with clients and ask questions as needed to clarify data and provide explanation of analysis. Consider client project goals, objectives and timelines in the development of analysis and preparation of reports and presentations. Develop and maintain professional relationships with clients.
- Project Coordination: Assist in planning, executing, and delivering consulting projects by tracking assigned tasks and ensuring timely completion. Maintain accurate project documentation and provide clear updates to team members and clients to promote alignment and transparency. Proactively identify potential risks or issues and escalate them to project managers for prompt resolution.
- Other Client Support: Support senior staff in business development activities including client research, proposal writing and occasional conference attendance.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's or Master’s degree in finance, economics, engineering, or a related field.
- 1+ years of relevant experience including working in professional services or for a public agency in accounting, finance, consulting, public accounting, engineering or other similar roles.
- Ability to perform financial and data analysis.
- Demonstrated attention to detail and adherence to project deadlines.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience with the entire Microsoft Office Suite, specifically MS Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
- Ability to travel occasionally to in-person client meetings, including evening City Council or Board meetings that may require overnight stay (usually within California).
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle and a valid driver's license.
