Publication Designer – Remote (U.S.) / Part Time
Background:
Kent, Campa and Kate Incorporated (KCK) is a federal contracting company that provides professional services to Government Agencies. We are currently seeking candidates for a part time Publication Designer position supporting the Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General.
Position Summary:
The OIG is responsible for safeguarding the integrity of HHS programs and ensuring the health and well-being of their beneficiaries. Through audits, investigations, and evaluations, OIG reports to the Secretary of HHS and Congress, offering recommendations to improve the management and operations of HHS programs.
We are seeking an experienced Publication Designer to work on a part time basis, designing and laying out core publications, including research reports and factsheets, while creating data visualizations and selecting visual elements to enhance content. The Publication Designer will maintain publication standards, incorporate feedback, and refine materials to improve clarity, impact, and relevance of OIG publications.
Requirements:
- Education Minimum: Bachelor’s degree in Visual Communications, Graphic Design, Journalism required or in related field, graduate degree a plus;
- Experience Minimum:At least five years’ experience in corporate, Federal agency, or journalistic writing and editing entity. Seven (7) or more years’ experience preferred
- Location Requirement: Accepting applications from AL, AZ, CA, DC, FL, GA, HI, MD, ME, MO, NJ, NV, OH, OR, PA, SC, TN, TX, VA, WA, WV
- Expert knowledge of the principles and practice of visualization of data and information for publications
- Expert knowledge in Microsoft Office Word and knowledge of Microsoft Office PowerPoint and publishing/graphics software such as Adobe InDesign and Adobe Acrobat
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills with teams and editors, including experience in negotiating revisions and issues with authors
- Excellent attention to detail
- Experience in publishing print media and reports with a design portfolio
- Experience in graphic design, including creating/editing graphics, typography, and page layout
- Experience in web design and communications (including compliance with Section 508 rules on accessibility)
- Knowledge of AP, Chicago, or Words into Type style; and,
- Effective at prioritizing tasks and managing energy and time
Working Duties (including, but not limited to):
- Design and assist in laying out material for core publications such as research reports, briefs, and factsheets
- Work with teams to develop infographics, illustrations, and other forms of data visualization. Research and select photographs, drawings, sketches, diagrams, and charts to enhance publications
- Organize material and complete assignments according to set standards regarding order, clarity, conciseness, style, and terminology
- Maintain records and files of work and revisions
- Review published materials, incorporate feedback from key stakeholders, and recommend revisions or changes in scope, format, content, and methods. Arrange for typing, duplication, and distribution of material
- Analyze developments in the professional field to determine need for refining previously published materials or templates and development of new material to enhance publication impact
